EMV calculator

Enter what a post or a campaign earned in views and engagements, and the rate you would pay for each in paid media. The calculator adds up the earned media value and compares it with what you spent.

Formula

How to calculate earned media value

Value of the views=views÷1,000×CPM

Then add each kind of engagement multiplied by its value: likes, comments, shares and saves. The total is the EMV.

A worked example: a campaign earned 250,000 views, 12,000 likes, 400 comments, 900 shares and 1,500 saves. At a $10 CPM the views are worth $2,500. At 10 cents a like, $1 a comment, $2 a share and $1 a save, the engagements are worth $4,900. The EMV is $7,400. If the campaign cost $5,000, it earned $1.48 of media value for every $1 spent.

Those rates are only an example. EMV has no agreed formula, so the figure is as good as the rates you put in. Use the CPM and the cost per engagement from your own paid social account, and keep them the same in every report.

Using it well

Use EMV to compare creators and channels

Compare creators

Run every creator in a campaign through the same rates. The ones with the most value for each dollar of fee are the ones to book again.

Compare with paid media

With your own ad rates in the calculator, EMV shows whether creators reached people for less than your ads do.

Report to a budget holder

A money figure is easier to read than a list of likes. State the rates beside it so the reader can check the sum.

Do not use it for sales

EMV says nothing about revenue. Measure sales with tracked links and promo codes, and report the two side by side.

For reach alone, the CPM calculator compares creators on cost per 1,000 views. To see whether a fee was fair in the first place, check it against the influencer rate calculator. For a longer guide, read what earned media value is in influencer marketing.

FAQ

EMV questions

Earned media value, or EMV, puts a money figure on the attention a post earned. It answers one question: what would these views and engagements have cost if you had bought them as paid media? It is used to compare creators and campaigns, and to report results to people who think in budgets.

Divide the views by 1,000 and multiply by a CPM. Then multiply each kind of engagement by the value you give it, and add everything up. With 250,000 views at a $10 CPM and 12,000 likes at 10 cents each, the EMV is $2,500 plus $1,200, which is $3,700.

No. Every tool and agency uses its own rates, which is why two EMV figures for the same post can differ widely. An EMV number means something only when the rates behind it are stated and stay the same from one report to the next.

Your own. Open your ad account and take the CPM and the cost per engagement you pay for paid social in the same market. That makes EMV a fair comparison with money you spend. The rates the calculator opens with are examples and not a benchmark.

Compare it with what the campaign cost. If a campaign cost $5,000 and earned $15,000 of media value at your own paid rates, it reached people for about a third of what ads would have cost you. The calculator shows this as EMV for every $1 spent.

No. EMV measures attention and ROI measures money returned. A post can have a high EMV and sell nothing. Use EMV to compare reach and engagement, and use tracked links and promo codes to measure sales.

Use whichever you can get for every post you are comparing, and do not mix them. For creator videos the public number is views, so most reports use views. If the creator shares their insights, reach and impressions are better.

What is earned media value?

Earned media value, or EMV, puts a money figure on the attention a post earned. It answers one question: what would these views and engagements have cost if you had bought them as paid media? It is used to compare creators and campaigns, and to report results to people who think in budgets.

How do you calculate EMV?

Divide the views by 1,000 and multiply by a CPM. Then multiply each kind of engagement by the value you give it, and add everything up. With 250,000 views at a $10 CPM and 12,000 likes at 10 cents each, the EMV is $2,500 plus $1,200, which is $3,700.

Is there a standard EMV formula?

No. Every tool and agency uses its own rates, which is why two EMV figures for the same post can differ widely. An EMV number means something only when the rates behind it are stated and stay the same from one report to the next.

Which rates should I use?

Your own. Open your ad account and take the CPM and the cost per engagement you pay for paid social in the same market. That makes EMV a fair comparison with money you spend. The rates the calculator opens with are examples and not a benchmark.

What is a good EMV?

Compare it with what the campaign cost. If a campaign cost $5,000 and earned $15,000 of media value at your own paid rates, it reached people for about a third of what ads would have cost you. The calculator shows this as EMV for every $1 spent.

Is EMV the same as ROI?

No. EMV measures attention and ROI measures money returned. A post can have a high EMV and sell nothing. Use EMV to compare reach and engagement, and use tracked links and promo codes to measure sales.

Should I count views or impressions?

Use whichever you can get for every post you are comparing, and do not mix them. For creator videos the public number is views, so most reports use views. If the creator shares their insights, reach and impressions are better.
